Orthopaedic trauma are injuries involving the musculoskeletal system. They can present as contusions, muscle strains, joint sprains, fractures, and dislocations. Simple conditions are sufficiently taken cared of by general orthopaedic surgeons. However, the more complex conditions, like knee dislocations, pelvic fractures, and multiply injured patients, may be beyond their field of competence, and require special management. These responsibilities are given to orthopaedic traumatologists. They are highly skilled surgeons, who after having a fellowship sub-specializing in trauma, who have devoted most of their practice in the specialty, and are acclaimed by their peers as experts.
